Key Skills
- Identifying Main Idea: The central theme or topic of the passage
- Supporting Details: Facts and examples that back up the main idea
- Author's Purpose: Why the author wrote the text (inform, persuade, entertain)
- Inference: Drawing conclusions based on evidence
Steps to Better Comprehension
Before Reading:
- Preview the title and headings
- Look at images or diagrams
- Ask what you expect to learn
While Reading:
- Read actively, not passively
- Highlight or underline key points
- Note unfamiliar words
- Ask questions about the content
After Reading:
- Summarize the main points
- Answer comprehension questions
- Discuss with others
- Review difficult sections
