Summary Writing

Condense texts into concise summaries

Writing Effective Summaries

A summary is a brief statement of the main points of a text, written in your own words.

Summary vs. Paraphrase

Paraphrase: Rewrite in different words, similar length

Summary: Condense to main points, much shorter

Steps to Write a Summary

Step 1: Read and Understand

  • Look up unfamiliar words
  • Identify the main idea

Step 2: Identify Key Points

  • Underline or note important information
  • Remove details and examples
  • Focus on the core message

Step 3: Write the Summary

  • Use your own words
  • Keep it brief (1/4 to 1/3 of original)
  • Include only essential information
  • Maintain the original meaning

Do:

  • Use your own words
