Summary vs. Paraphrase
Paraphrase: Rewrite in different words, similar length
Summary: Condense to main points, much shorter
Steps to Write a Summary
Step 1: Read and Understand
- Read the entire text
- Look up unfamiliar words
- Identify the main idea
Step 2: Identify Key Points
- Underline or note important information
- Remove details and examples
- Focus on the core message
Step 3: Write the Summary
- Use your own words
- Keep it brief (1/4 to 1/3 of original)
- Include only essential information
- Maintain the original meaning
Do's and Don'ts
Do:
- Use your own words
- Include only main ideas
- Be objective
Don't:
- Add personal opinions (unless asked)
- Include excessive details
- Use the same sentences as the original
