A strong vocabulary is essential for reading, writing, and communication. It can be developed through reading, context clues, and systematic learning.
Context Clues
Use surrounding words to guess unfamiliar word meanings:
- Definition: "The ocean is vast, or very large."
- Synonym: "She was happy and joyful about the news."
- Antonym: "Unlike the hilly terrain, the desert is flat."
- Example: "Citrus fruits like oranges are rich in vitamin C."
Word Roots and Affixes
Common Prefixes:
- un- (not): unhappy, unfair
- re- (again): redo, return
- pre- (before): preview, prepare
- dis- (not): disagree, dislike
Common Suffixes:
- -tion (act): creation, nation
- -able (can be): readable, comfortable
